One of the places that I found rhetoric being practiced was on a television show that my daughter watches, The Secret Life of an American Teenager. Amy, the main character, is pregnant fifteen-year-old girl who is considering giving her baby up for adoption, even though she doesn’t want to. Her friends convene in her living room to argue that she is capable of keeping the baby and caring for him. Her friends did support their argument with facts. They presented a fact to counter each objection she had. She needed a job to provide for the baby, insurance to take care of the baby, care for the baby while she was in school, etc. Her friends found her a job after school working in the church daycare where she could also leave her son while she went to school, and every church employee receives health care. So potentially Amy will be able to care for her baby. Their argument was also backed by emotion, because Amy knew that everyone wanted her to keep the baby including Amy herself.
